Self-guided coastal paddling

Safety & Readiness

The Broken Group is a real coastal paddling environment. Weather, tides, cold water, navigation, and group decision-making matter.

Self-guided trips: Paddlers are responsible for preparedness, judgment, official permits, and safe trip planning.

This is a self-guided coastal paddling trip

You are responsible for trip planning, group decisions, and safe paddling judgment. We provide kayaks and shore-side launch support — not on-water guiding.

Group leader expectations

Designate a group leader responsible for the float plan, weather calls, and group cohesion.

Experience expectations

Open-water sea kayak experience, self-rescue practice, and comfort with cold-water immersion are expected.

Weather and marine conditions

Check marine weather and tides before launching. Be prepared to delay or shorten your trip.

Cold water readiness

Dress for immersion, not air temperature.

Navigation readiness

Carry charts, compass, and a backup. Know your route and bailout options.

Camping permit responsibility

Self-guided paddlers are responsible for securing official Parks Canada camping permits.

What we provide

Sea kayaks, paddles, PFDs, spray skirts, bilge pump, paddle float, launch instructions, and shore-side launch support.

What paddlers must bring

Marine charts, navigation, weather radio, communications, dry bags, food and water, appropriate clothing, and emergency essentials.

Final readiness checklist

Use the trip checklist before arrival.
